Uzbekistan Museums Tour
This two-day tour takes you to Nukus and Khiva, two of the most important cultural sites in Uzbekistan. Igor Savitsky arrived in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan in the 1950s, and soon acquired a large collection of ethnographic materials about the people of Central Asia, plus the works of Soviet avant-garde artists who were banned by the state. The Savitsky Museum today is one of the most incredible museums in the world, with a collection unrivaled anywhere else.
The second day of the tour is taken up by Khiva, an excellent example of a wholly-preserved ancient city. As an open-air museum, Khiva is perfect for a stroll through narrow streets and intricately-decorated monuments, just to feel what the city was centuries ago, at the height of the Silk Road. Currently, there are 444 museums of various kinds functioning in Uzbekistan, 156 of which are national. Most of them are museums of history and regional studies and memorial museums dedicated to outstanding persons that left imprints on the country’s history or contributed to the development of the regional culture.
In the years of Independence 20 new museums have been opened in Uzbekistan, including several major themed ones, such as the State Museum of History of the Timurids (1996), Museum of Olympic Glory (1996) and State Museum of History of Uzbekistan (1992).
The museums contain over 2.5 million exhibits in their exhibition halls and storerooms, including numerous archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic items, artefacts of material culture and decorative and applied arts, manuscripts and other written materials and articles reflecting the history of independent Uzbekistan. There are 3 museum-preserves in the country – those in Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
Uzbekistan’s largest and most important museums are the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan, State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan, State Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan, State Museum of History of the Timurids, State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan and State Museum of Nature of Uzbekistan.
One of the most famous museums in Uzbekistan, a real phenomenon of “museum in the desert” as it was called by the leading art connoisseurs and experts, is the Karakalpak State Art Museum in the town of Nukus. It is named after its founder and the first director Igor Savitsky. The archeological exhibits of the museum tell about the intellectual wealth and culture of the ancient state Khorezm – the cradle of Zoroastrian doctrines, about trade relations of the Khoresmians with the antique world. The museum has a big collection of unique medieval ceramics, national Karakalpak silver and cornelian jewelry, traditional carpets.

Transfer to domestic airport. Morning flight to Nukus (1255 km, 2 h. 45 min.). Arrive in Nukus* and visit the Savitsky Karakalpakstan Art Museum**. The museum hosts the world's second largest collection of Russian avant-garde art and exposition of Karakalpak applied arts items. Have a short drive around center of Nukus: see statue of Karakalpak poet Berdakh, Nukus City Hall, and Drama Theatre. In the afternoon depart to Khiva (200 km, 4-5 h.). On the way visit archaeological monuments of Ancient Khorezm: Chilpyk Zoroastrian dakhma, and Toprak-Kala – the capital of Khorezm dating back to the 3rd century A.D. Arrive in Khiva, check in to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Check-out from hotel till noon. Today you will visit Ichan-Kala Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tour features visit to Mukhammad Aminkhan Madrasah, Mukhammad Rahimkhan Madrasah, Kalta-Minor, Juma Mosque, Tash-Khovli Palace, Pakhlavan Makhmud Mausoleum. Try yourself at climbing Islam-Khoja Minaret, the highest minaret in Uzbekistan. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Old Khiva in Kunya-Ark. Free time in the afternoon. In the evening you will be transferred to Urgench airport (30 min.) for flight to Tashkent. Upon arrival transfer to hotel/private residence. End of services.
